Horology is a timegrapher for mechanical watches. It listens to a watch with your device's microphone and shows how it is running. This policy says what the app does with your information. The short version: it stays on your device.
What Horology collects
Nothing. Horology has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking tools. I don't receive any information about you or how you use the app.
What stays on your device
Everything you create or record is stored in the app's private storage on your device:
- Your watches and notes, such as brand, model, reference, movement and beat rate.
- Readings: the rate, beat error and amplitude you chose to save, with their date, position and wind state.
- Photos of your watches, if you add them. Photos you take or choose are cropped and stored inside the app; the app doesn't change or upload anything in your photo library.
- A few small settings, such as your last-used watch position and whether Pro is unlocked.
If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it. Depending on your device settings, it may be included in your own iPhone or iCloud backups, like other app data. Horology doesn't send it anywhere.
The microphone
Horology needs the microphone to hear the watch. The audio is analysed live on your device to find the ticks, and then it is discarded. It is not saved and not sent anywhere.
One exception, which you control: in the measurement settings there is a Debug recording switch, off by default. When you turn it on, the app saves the audio and the analysis of that session to the app's folder on your device. Those files are only shared if you choose to share them (for example by sending them to me with your feedback).
The camera and photos
The camera is used only if you tap Take Photo to add a picture of a watch. Choosing a photo from your library uses Apple's photo picker, which gives the app only the photo you pick.
Reading the text on a photo. When you add a photo, the app can read the printed text on the watch (the brand and model on the dial, for example) to fill in the form for you. This is done on your device with Apple's text recognition; the photo is not sent anywhere.
Sharing. If you tap the share button, the app makes a picture of the watch and its latest reading and hands it to the iOS share sheet. Nothing is sent unless you pick where to send it.
Purchases
Horology is free to use. An optional one-time purchase (Pro) and optional tips are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details or your Apple ID; the app only learns whether Pro has been purchased on your account. To restore a purchase, use Restore Purchases in the app.
Feedback
If you choose Send Feedback, the app opens an email addressed to us, in your own mail app, with the message you wrote. If you leave the option on, it also includes the app version, your iOS version and your device model, and you can see exactly what will be sent before you press Send. Because it's an email, we will see your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to reply to you and to improve the app.
Children
Horology isn't directed at children, and it doesn't collect any information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at the same address with a new effective date.
